My latest academic publication, “Controversies and Challenges of Trustmarks: Lessons for Privacy and Data Protection Seals”, has recently been published in Privacy and Data Protection Seals, IT & Law Series Volume 28, distributed for T.M.C. Asser Press by Springer.
My contribution explores data protection seals and their relative challenges and controversies, highlighting significant aspects from the experience with trustmarks, and identifies key factors that may allow data protection seals to be better established on the market in the future, especially as we see online commerce growing exponentially. In the chapter I combine theoretical knowledge with empirical observations in order to establish a reliable yardstick that measures the effectiveness and impact of privacy trustmarks and I identify the legal challenges that will need to be overcome in order for trustmarks to gain momentum in the current and future marketplaces.
The book itself examines data protection certification schemes across the globe, but is of particular relevance with respect to the European context in light of the General Data Protection Regulation.
